The patients below are the first ten confirmed cases of the unknown pathogen. The cases span across the United States with patients found in Washington, Montana, Nevada, California, and Florida. Each box below is a summary of the patient file with a crucial details to the case. The suspected Patient 0 is also designated with its own box. Each patient is deceased and these files were given by family members or physicians that attempted to treat them.

Date of Birth: 09/28/1998

Status: Deceased

Location: 725B 16th Ave, Seattle, WA 98122    

Gender: Female

Date of symptom onset: 12/26/15

Admitted to hospital: Yes      Date Admitted: 12/30/15

Hospital Analysis: Blood smears indicated unknown pathogen in blood, tests for common were negative, antibiotics had zero effect, succumbed to an “unknown disease” on 01/08 of this year.

Symptoms: 12/26/15 reported feeling dizzy. 12/30/15 stopped working, couldn’t get out of bed, very high fever, body aches, and chills.

Travel: None

Medical History: No past problems. 

Occupation: Pet sitter, working with many animals in several houses.

Possible Vector Contact: She has also had to deal with several infestations of client's pets. Simon and Wilma Oliver flea infestation in their house affecting 12 cats. Madalyn Richer flea infestation on  “exotic" cat. Brett Mendoza flea & possible lice on dog and two cats (mild to no case) and person.  Yolande Geraghty flea infestation on long haired Australian shepherd and cat. Donnie Campbell  fleas infestation on poultry. Marvin Daniel fleas and tick infestation on dog.

Treatment Methods: Purchased new beds, gave cats flea bath, called extermination company, new cat tree, some cats required medical treatment. Poultry wrapped in blanket and  treated with vet advised methods. Tick washes on animals with ticks.

Date of symptom onset: 08/30/15

Hospital Analysis: Unknown pathogen present in blood, did not respond to antibiotics or antivirals. He slipped into coma and died from unknown infection on 09/05/15. Tissue and fluid samples were saved. 

Symptoms: 08/30/15 reported to have had migraine headache, severe body aches, dehydration, and couldn’t get out of bed.

Travel:  None

Medical history: No significant problems. Reports of many colds, flus, and respiratory infections each year.

Occupation: Worked with cats through The Cat Network, treating (fleas) and rehabilitating the cats . On 08/25 of last year, several feral cats were brought into the shelter. Bonny Lewis found 10 kittens under a dumpster outside the city. Marion Smith found tame adult cats near her house. Irma Jenkins found an elderly cat missing an ear from an unknown location. Sadie Waring found a purebred Serval cat from an unknown location. Woodrow Stevenson found twoRussian Blue kittens under a tarp in his backyard. Every cat was tested for feline leukemia, rabies, and FIP. If the cat had ticks, it was tested for all known tick diseases. All cats recovered, no showed signs of disease.

Possible Vector Contact: Giving flea dips and removing ticks from cats.

Hospital Analysis: Presence of unknown pathogen in blood, did not respond to treatment with oxygen, steroids, antivirals or antibiotics, progressed to coma and death on 10/21/15.

Medical History: Type I diabetic

Travel: China 8/04/15 - 08/25/15

Occupation: Inventory control specialist at the Miami Dade International Airport, came in contact with a lot of animals and searched crates

Possible Vector Contact: Bitten by a lot of insects while searching crates. Captured cats and gave them to The Cat Network.

Occupation: Writer in Homestead, Florida

Pets: Exotic Serval cat, two outdoor bulldogs

Possible Vector Contact: Dogs frequently come back with insects after being in dog run.12/20/15 cat got out and came back with a bad case of fleas.

Symptoms: General malaise, migraine headache, dehydration, dizziness, unconsciousness

Hospital Analysis: Treated for general symptoms with oxygen, fluids, antibiotics and antivirals. She succumbed on 01/11/16.

Medical History: Latex Sensitivity, heart problem, high blood pressure, skin cancer

Travel: 12/29/2014 Mexico 2 weeks, 11/10/2014 Mexico 2 days, 10/05/2014 United Kingdom 2 days, with recent flight patterns to Tokyo, Japan, Seoul, Korea, Beijing, China, Honolulu, HI, Amsterdam, London, Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, Mexico

Pets: Purchased exotic Serval cat 10/15/15

Possible Vector Contact: Flea infestation in house 10/27/15, reported many insect bites.

Medical History: Blood transfusion/organ transplant within last 12 months on 07/09, transfusion relating to lingering vector borne pathogen

Travel: Mexico Oct 8-19 of last year, Japan Sept. 10-20 of last year

Occupation: Stock broker

Pets: Komondor dog, Serval cat, Two Persian cats, Sphynx cat, Rainbow Lorikeet

Possible Vector Contact: Flea infestation in house was found in all the animals in September. All the cats died of unknown cause. Many insects on hills behind house.

Medical History: High blood pressure

Travel: None

Occupation: Vet tech at West Charleston Animal Hospital in Las Vegas. Treated several exotic parrots, three wolves, a large breed of dog, a Serval cat, two Sand Cats, a Pampas cat, and a painted donkey.

Possible Vector Contact: Gives bath to animals with a flea or tick infestation. Bit by mosquitoes but not infected with West Nile

Occupation: Elderly housekeeper for wealthy people

Possible Vector Contact: Was in contact with exotic pets at houses she took care of

Symptoms: Severe dehydration, fever (broke and came back in 24 hours) chills, body aches, and insomnia. Progressed to coma and then death

Hospital Analysis: Ttreated with IV antibiotics and antivirals, was given oxygen and fluids, succumbed from infection 10/25/15.

Medical History: Father suffers from blindness, mother suffers from depression

Travel: Malawi, Africa July 14-August 25th of last year for business

Occupation: Managed an exotic cat website for Servals

Possible Vector Contact: Imported cats had fleas from airplane transport. Cats acquired fleas again in the kennel on 08/15/15, which was not handeled until 08/19/15.

Patient 0 of infection. Vickie imported Serval cats from Malawi, Africa. These cats were infected with fleas on the ride to the U.S. One cat escaped, which is presumably the cat Sadie Waring found outside her house close to the Miami International Airport. Another flea infestation broke out among the cats while they were in kennels waiting to be sold. All the cats were sold before the infestation could be treated. Madalyn Richer acquired her Serval cat on 10/15/15, most likely from this breeder, and took it back to Seattle, Washington.

Medical History: Precancerous moles and other skin problems

Travel: San Francisco, CA for Christmas last year

Pets: Healthy Australian Shepard dog, very sick Calico cat

Occupation: Manager at Starbucks in Seattle, Washington

Possible Vector Contact: Flea infestation broke out in her house. Fleas were noticeably jumping in the cat bed. Suffered through infestation until 12/29/15.
